Pam Arliss - 22/09/2022 17:08

It is with sadness that I have to report that Pam Arliss passed away last Monday. Pam joined
the club in 1989. Pam will be known to some of you as an accomplished player and she did a
considerable amount for the club, especially on the catering side, running catering for the summer school week.

Our thoughts are with Bill at this time

A fuller tribute will be published in due course.

Club Closure - 15/09/2022 16:06

As you know a public holiday has been declared on Monday 19 September for Queen
Elizabeth’s funeral. The committee has decided that as a mark of respect the club
will be closed that day.

Very grateful thanks to Chris Constable for managing a difficult tournament so ably.

CA GC Interclub semi final

This was played against Watford at Sussex County Croquet Club on a damp day (Weds 14th sept) after several postponements.

Unfortunately our lowest handicappers were unavailable and so in the morning Liz and Paul took on Nick and Jason who were both -3. We managed to take one game in the doubles but lost 2 -1. Daphne lost to Simon and Noel beat Kevin .

In the afternoon, both Liz and Paul lost while Noel beat Simon and , as we knew by then that we had lost the match, Daphne and Kevin drew 1 all.

A match where Watford won 4 -2 with one drawn game.

CA Interclub is quite a commitment as you could end up playing in the North, South, East or West of the country according to how the draw goes.

We played and beat Woking at Woking, East Dorset at East Dorset, then lost to Watford, who will now play a very strong Roehampton team.

My thanks to all those who have played this competition for the club. Richard, Bob, Ian, Roger, Ben, Noel, Paul and Daphne.

Liz Farrow

No Doubles GC Competition today. Weather forecast too bad

The new programme of coaching from the Croquet Academy has been released and is available on the Croquet Academy website or for downloading as a pdf.

GC B level Annual Tournament

A small entry meant that only an expanded B level event ran, with 14 players players cross block to give seven games in the day. Bernie Phillips (handicap 5) from Guildford & Godalming club won all his games; four of his opponents were of a lower handicap than himself - 3 handicap 3's and one 4 - so this was a decisive win for him.

Southwick provided the usual good weather - a few spots of rain in the middle of the day only - with lawns which had slowed substantially since the height of the dry period.

Thanks to all for taking part.

AC Annual Tournament

This is the Club's premier summer AC event but unfortunately only attracted a very small entry so that it was not possible to run the three advertised class events. 12 players entered but due to Covid and a dental emergency we ended up with 10 players so the competition in one class only was played as a Swiss.

Both Tuesday and Wednesday had pleasant weather, albeit a little windy windy.

The Manager generally prefers a strict Swiss but some slow games in the first two rounds forced a change to a flexible Swiss and less than optimum pairings in the third round of the first day. That day saw split results with only James Tuttiett winning all three matches.  The fourth round spelt a set-back to James as he lost to scratch player John Daniels, putting them both and Liz Farrow on 3/4 wins and 4 others snapping at their heels with 2/4 wins and one round to go.

On Wednesday afternoon, having been quickly trounced by Jon Diamond, I watched much of a lovely game between Liz Farrow and James Tuttiett (back playing with some fluency, he said, after some years in the doldrums), which James won with a well controlled TP.

Meanwhile on lawn 3 a very tense match was unfolding between David Marcus and John Daniels. David is known for his - shall we say deliberate - speed of play and this seemed to be getting to John part way through the match. They were neck and neck with 10 or so minutes to go but in the end John pulled ahead on time. David then hit a 30 yarder across the lawn for his final turn but was unable to get sufficiently in front of 4-back to start a final burst to the peg and so went down 22-19.

Congratulations to John Daniels.

The cup John is holding - the Abbey Challenge Cup - is one of the Club's oldest, having been used continuously for A level AC play at the Summer Tournament since 1927 (apart from the 1939-45). It has a few well-known names on it, including D D Steele and John Solomon. Not much is known about W H Abbey, except that he was a generous benefactor of the Club in its earlier years.
