Surbiton wins Federation GC Ladies Day at Southwick

The GC Ladies Day is an annual event run by the Southeast Croquet federation and hosted by Sussex County.

Frances Low, Sussex member and event Joint-Manager with Linda Gavigan , reported on the day to the assembled players afterwards on behalf of herself and Linda:

Many thanks for coming to Southwick yesterday. It was lovely to see so many of you - familiar faces and new ones!

I hope you enjoyed the day. The weather was kind to us.

Many thanks to Linda for her help and encouragement, to Mike Oulton and Jackie for refereeing and to Jonathan and Chrissy for the catering.

The winners as you know were Surbiton with 5 match wins and 13 games won. 2nd place were Guildford with 5 match wins but 11 game wins. So close! Congratulations to Surbiton.

The other places:

3rd Reigate P , 4th Chichester, 5th Rottingdean, 6th Sussex 1, 7th Littlehampton, 8th Cheam, 9th Ealing, 10th Sussex 2, 11th Rother Valley and 12th Tunbridge Wells. All were very close so it went down to games won or hoop difference!

Well done everyone. An enjoyable and friendly day.

Many thanks to Bill Arliss for allowing us to use his spreadsheet and for all his expert help. Good to see him and Pam during their visit today.

Best wishes to you all from Linda and myself. We will have a 'klaxon' next year!

Sussex trounce Merton in Federation GC Level League

On Thursday 15th July Sussex A played a home match against Merton.
The teams were:-
Sussex A
Morgan Case  -2 handicap
Richard Brooks  -1 (captain)
Bob Clark  -1
Paul Castell  -1

Merton
Graham Withrington  0
Carolyn Doswell  3 (captain)
Simon Emdin  3
Hilary Davis  4

With a 15 point handicap advantage we obviously started as favourites and so it proved to be when we ran out as 6-1 match winners.

However we must congratulate our opponents for putting up a hard fight and each of our players lost at least one game in the best of 3 encounters. This meant that we all lost points on our handicap cards in spite of the margin of victory.
Our final league match of the season is away at Dulwich on 18th August.

With one more match to play in the League, Sussex A are 3-0 up.

On Monday 5th July we held the first newbies tournament. This was for players new to the game of golf croquet who have not played in a tournament before with handicaps of 9 and above.

The Tournament was won by Nira Scutt who joined the club in October 2020.

She beat Rachel Pointon  4- - 0 in the final. Well done, Nira

On Wednesday 30th June Sussex County A team visited Compton to play a SECF level play league fixture.
The teams were as follows:-
Sussex A
Richard Brooks -1 handicap (captain)
Liz Farrow -1
Bob Clark -1
Paul Castell 0

Compton
Peter Dowd -3
Mike Jay 3
Andrew Fall 4
Richard Platt 4 (captain)

In the morning session Richard & Liz beat Peter & Mike 2-1
Bob beat Andrew 2-1 and Paul beat Richard 2-1
With Sussex having a 3-0 lead at lunch Compton needed to win all of the afternoon singles to claim the match.
Our top two didn’t succeed with Compton getting their revenge for the Doubles defeat with Peter beating Richard 2-0 & Mike beating Liz 2-1.
Fortunately our 3rd & 4th players saw us home to victory with Bob beating Richard 2-0 & Paul winning his match against Andrew 2-0

Final result Sussex A won the match 5-2

Points of interest for those who are statistically minded:-
Sussex scored 106 hoops to Compton’s 88
Because of the difference in handicaps each of the Sussex players actually lost index points with a cumulative total of minus 56!

Report by Richard Brooks (Sussex A captain)

The AC National Veterans Championship took place at Budleigh Salterton this year.

The C Class competition of players with handicaps 4 to 6, saw David Marcus, win 6 out of 7 games and take the bottle of wine and a ‘memento’, a black enamel coated croquet figure made from nuts and bolts.

Over an amazing weekend of croquet at Parkstone in Dorset three Southwick players, Dominic Nunns (England), Chris Coull (Scotland) and Tudor Jenkins (Wales) managed to represent each of the three countries playing at the AC home internationals last weekend.  This ensured that one of us would be part of the winning team and it turned out to be Dominic with an unbeaten record playing for England.
