News

Having been postponed because of covid, the 10:10 Competition was finally held on Friday 11 March.    For those who have never played one, golf croquet is played at speed.   The game is timed with a chess clock  and each pair has only 10 minutes of play.    If one side runs out of time they can only defend and try to stop the other side from scoring any further hoops.     The record today for completing a 13 point game was around eight minutes play!     Clearance shots certainly get people running if they are the next ball.

Each pair played seven games and took turns manning clocks.

Robyn & Bob Clark, Fiona Phillips &Tony Jolly and Clive Hayton & Ben Harwood all won four games but the clear winners were Liz Farrow and Morgan Case with 5 wins and 2 draws.

Fiona Phillips

Thanks to Fiona for organising and managing the day.

GC Doubles Competition 4th March 2022 Report and Results

Today after a slightly delayed start due to a major traffic jam on the A281 due to tree damage and faulty traffic lights. We had 2 very interesting competitions.

In Block A The result went to the wire with any of 3 pairs being in a position to win the tournament in the last round. Eventually we ended up with 2 pairs (Ivan Segal & Brian Aikens and Liz Farrow & Linda Gavigan) both with 5 wins.
Ivan & Brian won on net hoop difference by 3 hoops.

Block B was played in two sub blocks of 6 players. Chris Heath & Simon Fenn-Tye won all 5 of their games and Beryl Hughes & Vincent L’Estrange also won all 5 games in their block.
The two pairs played each other to determine the final result with Chris and Simon winning 7-5.

The weather held up quite well except for an increasingly cold wind during the afternoon session.

Jonathan Isaacs
Tournament Manager

Thanks to Jonathan for managing the competition and to Linda Davies, Any Tucker and Nick Hamilton for organising the lunch.

The system currently in place for paying for the summer club competitions is the same as last season:

Once the deadline for entry is reached you will receive an email setting out your entries, how much you have to pay and the bank details for the club account to which you should transfer the funds.

There is currently no need to pay in advance or yet. The deadline is Sunday 27th March.

If you don't use email the Competitions Secretary will know this and make contact with you by other means.

You can enter with this form

and you can check all the entries on this page.

New year, new look! - 07/02/2022 17:10

This is your new look club website. Comments welcome but be constructive or I may down tools!

The side links which caused  problems on some devices have gone and the links integrated into the main menu but mostly you will find the same items where there were before.

The AGM is coming soon on Saturday 5th March in the clubhouse and then the new season is upon us. I wish you all an enjoyable 2022 croquet season.

John Low

First one-day competition of the year is oversubscribed

Our one-day competitions remain highly popular as today's event was played with a full complement of 40 players and 3 reserves left sadly unable to secure a place. This is set to continue as the next doubles day is also already fully subscribed.

Today's competition was in three divisions with a cross-over final round for the two lower divisions. Richard Brooks and David King won division one outright. In Division 2A  both Tony Jolly & Fiona Phillips and Phil Harrison & Steve Chapman had 4/5 wins but a better net score gave Tony & Fiona the top place. Division 2B was won outright by Fran Box & Graham Tucker who won all their games. Congratulations to all three winning teams and thanks to Linda for managing it so ably and for organising the lunch.

Talk for newer members about competitions at SCCC

Graham Tucker, our Club Competitions Secretary, is planning a series of talks about the club competitions.

The first of these talks is on Thursday 10th February, in the Clubhouse at 12 midday. The purpose is to inform our newer members about competitions within the club.

He will provide information and ideas to help members answer for themselves these common questions:
"Which competitions should I enter?"
"What commitment am I making when I enter competitions?"
"How are the competitions organised?"

He will also look at various other opportunities for competitive play at SCCC, at the Club's Website and give guidance on accessing information and entering and following the club's competitions online.

The session is orientated towards newer members or anyone who is not familiar with the operation of our competitions.

It may only be January but you can start thinking about the coming croquet season and make you entries to our program of club competitions in GC, AC and, for the first time this season, Short Croquet (SC).

GC Competitions

All the favourite competitions are there with a couple of changes. Some of the competition formats have been changed between blocks and knockouts to take account of changing popularity of the different events.  There are also two NEW competitions: the Southwick Cup, a knockout event for GC players of C level (handicap 7 or over); and a GC Super Vets Cup, for which you must be 80 years young.

AC Competitions

Roger Sutton, Graham Tucker (our new Club Competitions Secretary) and the Committee have made a number of changes to the AC competition list to address the sadly reduced entry levels for some of our cups. The Fryer and Franc Cup competitions, which were gendered competitions for similar skill ranges, have been combined into a new Franc Cup for all players with AC handicaps of 16 or below  (handicap play). The Hazel Parker Cup has been dropped.

Short Croquet

For the first time the Club is offering a Short Croquet competition using the now redundant Hazel Parker Trophy. For those who don't know, SC is a form of AC played on a half lawn to slightly different rules. There is a fuller explanation of SC on this website here. Frances Low and her team of coaches have been running coaching sessions in SC over the winter season and there are more to follow. These are primarily aimed at GC players who would like to try a different form of the game.

Read the Rules!

Before entering the competitions, Graham would appreciate it if you headed over to the two rules pages on this site: rules for GC competitions are here; and you can find the AC and SC ones on this page. The can be found in the menu under Croquet - Club & Team Competitions - GC (or AC) Summer Season Competitions. It is important to read these before entering as the handicap ranges for a number of competitions have been altered from last season.

There is also an important change for those occasions when you can't play a match.  If you cannot play an opponent YOU MUST  NOT OFFER THEM A WALKOVER, instead please contact Graham Tucker who will arrange a replacement player or other solution.

Graham Tucker will be running explanatory sessions in February and March to help members choose which competitions to enter, to outline the other competitive opportunities  (team play in friendly matches, leagues, open competitions) and how to make entries on the online entry system.

Entry Form

The entry form can be found in the menu system under Croquet - Club & Team Competitions - Enter summer club competitions

Enjoy the summer season of competitive club croquet at Southwick!
